For some years now, I have been developing a personal photographic project entitled Un-occupied places. The subject is linked to the research of abandoned places and buildings, left to their fate: residential buildings, industrial buildings, villages, houses, historical dwellings.
The project therefore is part of the photographic category known as Urbex, contraction of Urban Exploration.
At the beginning, I became passionate about this photographic category without having in mind a project to develop. Then, having shot some pictures, I decided to organize them and take others, with the purpose to grow a project.
The pictures are the outcome of a long investigation, research and exploration of abandoned places, photographically fascinating. This brought me to discover places that I would never have considered and that I could not even have thought they could exist. During this photographic journey, I have found out many places left to themselves and, contrary to what one could believe, not only industrial and residential buildings, but entire villages, historical houses of particular value that are incredibly forgotten and left to disintegrate over time.
I have mainly focused my attention on interiors rather than exteriors. In interiors, there are thick patterns of lights, shadows and half-lights that alternate and intersect standing out on decaying surfaces. I find interesting the contrast light – shadow between interior and exterior, light spread out from doors and windows, as unique sources of light left to brighten spaces forgotten in the darkness of oblivion.
The pictures exhibited are the outcome of a careful selection in the myriad I have taken.
So, what is the meaning of my project? The meaning is that in order to obtain the desired results, I was “forced” to read up very carefully, to find out and reach hidden places going through little known paths, learning and developing new photographic techniques, selecting the appropriate materials for framing the prints and learning to shape the frame cardboard. The most important thing in a trip is not the destination, but the way to arrive at it.

Le persone giungono sempre al momento giusto nei luoghi in cui sono attese.

Da qualche anno, sto sviluppando un progetto fotografico personale dal titolo Luoghi dis-occupati. Il tema è legato alla ricerca di posti ed edifici abbandonati, lasciati al proprio destino: abitazioni civili, edifici industriali, paesi, ville, dimore storiche.
Il progetto si inserisce nel genere fotografico denominato Urbex, abbreviazione derivante dalle parole inglesi Urban Exploration, Esplorazione Urbana.
Inizialmente, mi sono appassionato a questo genere di fotografia senza avere in mente un progetto da sviluppare. Poi, col materiale accumulato, ho deciso di dare organicità alle foto già scattate e di farne di nuove, con l'intento di dar vita a un progetto.
Le fotografie sono il risultato di una lunga documentazione, ricerca e perlustrazione di luoghi dismessi, interessanti dal punto di vista fotografico. Questo, mi ha portato a scoprire luoghi e realtà che non avrei mai considerato e che neanche avrei potuto pensare potessero esistere. In questo mio percorso, ho appreso che esistono molti, troppi luoghi abbandonati a se stessi e, contrariamente a quello che si possa credere, non solo edifici industriali dismessi o normali abitazioni civili, ma interi paesi, dimore ed edifici storici di particolare pregio che, inspiegabilmente, sono dimenticati e lasciati a disgregarsi al trascorrere del tempo.
Mi sono concentrato principalmente sugli interni degli edifici rispetto agli esterni. Nella parte interna, si presenta una densa trama di luci, ombre e penombre che si alternano e si intersecano stagliandosi su superfici decadenti. Trovo interessante il contrasto complementare luci e ombre tra interno ed esterno, luce diffusa da finestre e porte, le uniche fonti di luce rimaste a rischiarare questi ambienti dimenticati nel buio dell'oblio.
Le fotografie esposte sono il prodotto di un'accurata selezione tra la miriade di quelle che ho scattato.
Dunque, qual è il senso di questo progetto? Il senso è che per ottenere i risultati voluti, sono stato “costretto” a documentarmi in maniera approfondita, a scoprire e raggiungere luoghi nascosti attraversando itinerari poco battuti, apprendere e sviluppare nuove tecniche fotografiche, scegliere il materiale adatto per incorniciare le stampe e imparare a sagomare il cartoncino per la cornice. La cosa più importante di un viaggio non è la meta, ma il percorso per raggiungerla.
